What Writing Lessons Can Be Learned From Avengers: Age of Ultron
We are probably pushing it in terms of relevance with this writing advice article but with Avengers: Age of Ultron, still in the UK top 10 (at the time of writing) I think we can get away with it. Over the past few weeks I’ve seen a couple of writing articles talking about What Writing Lessons You Can Be Learned From Avengers: Age of Ultron. So without much further ado lets have a look. There will be spoilers below the break so you have been warned!
The Good Things You Can Learn from Avengers: Age of Ultron
We’ll we start with the positive things and for that we turn to Shanan Haislip‘s guest post on The Write Practice. In her article 3 Writing Tips You Can Learn From Avengers: Age of Ultron she unsurprising highlights three things all writers could learn from the movie. They are:
- Fix Tension Between Plot and Character Motivation
- Give Your Villian Some Common Sense
- Mix Up The Majestic Monologues…A Little
Each tip comes with a paragraph about how the movie did the particular tips and how you could use it in your own writing. To find these out head over to The Write Practice to read the whole article. As usual all The Write Practice articles finish with an exercise so now you have no excuse to check out 3 Writing Tips You Can Learn From Avengers: Age of Ultron
What Not To Learn from Avengers: Age of Ultron
Now the bad stuff. In fact this is really only one thing but considering how angry it makes K.M. Weiland, who first put this point into a writing context on her website Helping Writers Become Authors. You can hear her thoughts on what the movie’s writer Joss Whedon did wrong here.
For those who can view the video at this moment in time, don’t worry K.M. Weiland has included a transcript of the video on her article Why Authors Can’t Afford to Dupe Their Readers (or Why Hawkeye Ruined Age of Ultron). The latter half of that title is a little unfair but that is a separate argument!
