Happy Birthday Livingston – A Poem

Happy Birthday Livingston - A Poem

Back in 2011, Jenifer entered a competition called My Kind of Town where people wrote poems about the major towns and cities in Scotland with her poem Happy Birthday Livingston. One of the rules of the competition was that each poems had to be in a particular style. Jenifer was one of eight winners winning a set of limited editions Tennants Glasses(!) and publication in the Sunday Mail!

If you would like to read more of Jenifer‘s writing you can do so on her Author’s page or tell her what you think of her poem in the comments below!

How Do You Show, Not Tell?

How Do You Show, Not Tell?

The other day Jenifer said she felt she was telling rather than showing in her novel and wasn’t sure how to change it so we had a quick look online and found some excellent articles on exactly that subject. First lets define what we are talking about.

Anyone who has taken a writing class will have heard the phrase

Show Don’t Tell

What the phrase means is that as a write you should be showing your reader what is happening rather than telling them. If you are still a little confused the exercise below the break should clearly explain the phrase.

How to Edit Your Own Work

How to edit your own work can feel as scary as first putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard. The first thing to remember is this quote from Sarah Stewart:

Completely disregard all [editing] advice when working on your first draft. Write freely and just get your words down on the page. Once you have the shape of your story, there’s plenty of time for fiddling and applying the suggestions above.

The quote comes from her article Five Things: Quick Fixes For Your Writing that featured in our post Editing Hints & Tips we published in May 2014. Once you’ve finished your first draft, check out the following hints and tips for editing your own work below the break.

The Gift – A Series of Poems

A few weeks ago Anne E. Edwards read a series of poems called The Gift at one of our meeting. Today she asked me to share the poems on here. Anne wrote these poems while she was away at a writing retreat in Kippford with Alistair Paterson. If you’d like to read more of Anne’s writing than check out her author’s page.

WLW Meeting 28/10/2014

This week we held our Halloween party with plenty of scary things, wonderful tales and lots of free food! We saw a wonderful turn out of seven people to enjoy what is always a great meeting! Due to the amount of writing we had we look at the writing first and the news after so that is how we’ll be reporting the meeting
